I’m so glad I’ve started – and stuck to – a rigorous and uplifting home based exercise program, especially at this time of year.
The thing is at this time of year I see the same thing happening to people.
As the temperature starts to drop, people start getting ill.
They complain about how run down they are or that they’ve been unable to get rid of the cold that that has been plaguing them for a week.
This is when Autumn and Winter can start to feel like a grind and not as joyful as Summer.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Keeping yourself warm is important and Mrs Fitter Stronger You buying me a travel Thermos flask recently was a stroke of genius.
It’s not unusual for me to drink five to seven cups of hot drinks a day!
But working out five days out of seven each week for just 20 minutes a day in my living room has been a game changer.
Long ago I broke the habit of not putting myself first because frankly I’m more useful those who rely on me when I’m fit and healthy.
Plus I was tired of feeling tired all the time.
This is the foundation of being able to nurture strong relationships for me at least.
Because I’m fitter and stronger, mentally and physically, everyone I come into contact with has the best version of me and in turn they appreciate the way I can help them.
Everyone from the special needs children who are in my care to my family when I’m at home.
But breaking the habit of not putting yourself first can be hard for a lot of people.
It can seem powerfully counterintuitive to look after yourself first before kids, work, spouse, family and all the things that are important to you.
But your relationships – the ones that matter – are based on real connections with real people.
Plus remember this guy:
Relationship connections can be exponentially improved by regular exercise and home cooked healthy food.
Which means looking after yourself first.
Don’t believe me?
Right now I’m reading a great book called Get Over Your Damn Self by Romi Neustadt.
In it she talks about the need to ‘ditch the guilt’ and start focusing on the things that matter to you.
Neustadt promotes self empowerment as a way of becoming the most powerful version of yourself.
I promote health and fitness as way for you to achieve self empowerment by putting yourself first.
First comes your workouts.
Next come your home cooked recipes.
After that comes those strong and important relationships in your life in which you’ll feel much more in control of.
It really is that simple, but not easy.
That’s why I’m so thankful for the coaches and mentors that are helping me to stay on track not only with my health and nutrition but also my business.
They mentor me to be a coach and a mentor to you and I’m glad to say that it’s working.
More people are putting themselves first and having me coach and mentor them and keep the accountable to their goals.
What has surprised me is that I’m a working parent coaching some people who are themselves coaches and mentors in other fields and industries.
It really is amazing to experience small, middle and large victories that comes with coaching people through health and fitness and when you put yourself first.
