Does it make you think of a boot camp type scene with drill sergeants barking orders at recruits and trying to make them so tired that they end up as a heap on the floor?
This is not the case at Fitter Stronger You classes.
At Fitter Stronger You we sometimes use circuit training as a fun and sociable way to burn fat by splitting you into pairs or small groups and setting up circuit ‘stations’ for you to perform a variety of different exercises.
What Is Circuit Training?
Circuit training is a fast-paced class in which you perform one exercise at a station with others in a small group for 1 to 2 minutes.
Once the time is up you’re group will have a 30 second rest then move on to another exercise station to perform a different exercise.
It’s like a game of musical chairs: each group begins at a station (that is, a place where an exercise is performed), and when the coach says “Time!” everyone moves to the next station.
Sometimes classes alternate an aerobic activity (like jumping jacks or skipping) with a muscle-strengthening activity (like press ups).
At Fitter Stronger You we incorporate circuits into our other sessions such as kettlebells to improve your strength, stamina and technique.
As with all classes at Fitter Stronger You there are modified versions of each exercise as well as intensified versions to enable you to perform exercises – you can either slow it down or speed it up!
What Are The Benefits Of Circuit Training?
The circuit classes at Fitter Stronger You form part of a suite (HIIT, kettlebells and exercise to music classes) that complement our core theme of Boxercise – they are fun, challenging and make you to feel fitter.
To achieve your fitness goals you will use a variety of equipment including your own body weight, skipping ropes, pads, gloves, measuring tapes, ropes and more.
The main advantages of a circuit style exercise class are:
- Differentiation: using a mixture of cardiovascular, padwork, muscular strength and endurance and ab work, you will able to perform 6-10 different exercises in a short amount of time. It makes classes quick, snappy and enjoyable while you improve your physical fitness when so many other classes can go stale from a lack of variety
- Teamwork: You will perform exercises in small groups often working in pairs with a variation such as a shuttle run with 10 jabs in the middle of the run. Importantly you will be encouraged and assisted by others in your group and in turn assist and encourage other yourself.
- Whole body workout: ever found yourself winging your workout? (it’s okay we’ve all done it.). The advantage of using a circuit style format in class is that I’m able to set up stations for you in a way that works all of your body (ab crunches/squats/press ups)
Are There Any Special Considerations For Circuit Style Classes?
Only that you should expect a fun and sociable workout that gives you experience of using a variety of equipment for short periods of time in to train your whole body.
The circuit style classes I’ve included into a session have been a great way to get people to socialise as well as getting sweaty.
They are designed to challenge your endurance both muscular and cardiovascular and leave you with a feeling of accomplishment.
